It certainly seems strange, but it can happen. The evaporator coil depends on a steady flow of warm indoor air passing over its surface. That air provides the heat the refrigerant needs to absorb during the cooling process.

When an air filter becomes severely restricted, airflow across the evaporator coil can drop significantly.

Less airflow means less heat reaches the coil.

If the coil becomes cold enough, moisture in the indoor air can begin freezing onto its surface.

  • At first, it may appear as a thin layer of frost.

  • Then the ice begins to build.

As the ice accumulates, it further restricts airflow. That reduced airflow allows the coil to become even colder, causing additional moisture to freeze.

Before long, the evaporator coil can become almost completely encased in ice. The air conditioner may continue running, but very little conditioned air reaches the living spaces.

The house may still cool, but the system may have to work harder to do it.

I've been to homes where replacing a severely restricted filter made a noticeable difference in system operation within a short time. Cooling cycles returned closer to normal, airflow improved, and the equipment no longer had to fight the same restriction.

The system hadn't suddenly become more powerful. It simply wasn't working against a major airflow restriction anymore.

The honest answer is that there isn't one replacement schedule that works for every home.

A busy household with two dogs and three children will generally load a filter much faster than a couple living in a quiet home. Homes undergoing renovations, properties near construction, houses with frequently open windows, and homes exposed to high pollen or dust levels may also require more frequent filter changes.

That's why I don't recommend blindly following a rule such as “replace it every 30 days.” Instead, I suggest making regular filter inspections part of your routine.

Check the filter at least once a month.

Depending on the home, the filter might need to be replaced every 30 days, while another home may be able to go 60 or even 90 days.

The appropriate interval can depend on:

  • Number of people living in the home

  • Pets

  • Filter type and size

  • Indoor air conditions

  • Home renovations

  • Local dust and pollen levels

  • How frequently the HVAC system operates

In my experience, regular inspection is more useful than simply following the calendar.
